But what are these drugs exactly?
How do they work?
And what are the pros and cons?
Here’s a quick summary from the personal trainers at The One Percent Club Marylebone
What are GLP-1s?
GLP-1 stands for Glucagon-Like Peptide-1 — a hormone your body naturally produces in the gut after eating. GLP-1 receptor agonist medications such as Ozempic, Mounjaro and Wegovy mimic this hormone to regulate blood sugar, appetite and digestion. They were originally developed to treat Type 2 diabetes and are now widely prescribed for weight management.

How do they work?
Appetite Regulation - They send a signal to the brain that you are full and therefore reduce hunger and cravings.
Slow Gastric Emptying - Food moves through the stomach more slowly, prolonging the feeling of fullness.
Insulin Secretion - They stimulate the pancreas to release insulin in response to blood sugar rises.
Glucagon Suppression - Reduce the liver's release of stored glucose, helping stabilise blood sugar levels.
What are the pros?
Significant weight loss — clinical trials show average losses of 10–15% body weight
Improved blood sugar control in Type 2 diabetes
Reduced cardiovascular risk — evidence of lower rates of heart attack and stroke in high-risk individuals
Improved blood pressure and cholesterol markers
Reduced hunger and food noise
What are the cons?
Muscle loss- up to 50% with some drugs
Weight regain when stopping
Common side effects- Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea and constipation are very common
Unknown long term safety data
Gallstone risk
Nutritional deficiencies
