When it comes to being the healthiest, fittest version of you, having a healthy amount of body fat is key.

Losing body fat to achieve this however, despite it coming down to the simple principle of energy in VS energy out, is something people can really struggle with.

And this is often due to the mindset with which they approach it with.

So today I want to make this easier for you, with these 8 key principles to set you up for successful fat loss and to help you keep it off for good!

  1. Accept it’s hard! Living an unhealthy lifestyle and being overweight is what most people in the UK do because it’s the easy option. Losing weight and deciding to live a healthy lifestyle is harder, there’s no escaping that.
  2. Accepting this but focusing on all the amazing benefits you get from losing weight and feeling energised and healthy is a great way to look at it instead.
  3. It’s not a punishment. Eating well, working out and losing weight isn’t a punishment and the more you look at it like one the more it will feel that way. Think more of all then amazing things you get to do!
  4. You get to improve how you feel each day, you get to feel reenergised, you get to feel strong etc.
  5. It’s not forever. Remember that losing weight and being in a deficit isn’t forever. It’s just to get you to your target healthy weight and then your calories can go back up as you maintain your healthier weight there.
  6. It is forever. Also remember it’s not about returning to how you ate and lived before you reached your target weight! People are overweight due to the lifestyle they lead so it’s not a lifestyle you want to return to! Instead continue with your new healthier habits but with a few more calories each day.
  7. It’s not about perfection. Perfectionism can very quickly ruin the journey to any goal. And as ‘perfect’ doesn’t exist, its not a sensible target to aim for!
  8. What you can aim for however is being consistent and this is the key to successful weight loss. Doing what you need to do 80% of the time is going to get your further than trying to do everything perfectly and then giving up as soon as you have an off plan moment.

6.Stopping is the only way to not get there. Fat loss is much like a car journey from point A to point B. If you start a journey and you hit traffic, you might go a little slower. If there are road works you might have to find a different route. But if you want to get to your destination ,the only way that happens is by keeping going. And the only way it doesn’t happen is by turning around giving up and going home. And its exactly the same with fat loss.

7.Stop looking for a quick fix. There is no escaping the fact that effort is needed for achieving any worthwhile goal. And as I said earlier, losing fat is difficult, whilst living in a society where most people are overweight! But there is no quick fix! So put your energy into getting on with fat loss instead of looking for secret cheat codes or magic pills! Sustainable fat loss takes time, effort and behavioural change.

8.It requires sacrifice. Losing weight and keeping it off takes sacrifice. There unfortunately is no reality where you can eat everything you want, when you want and still exist at your healthy target weight. You will have to practice balance and discipline and say no to things. No one who is fit and healthy gets that way by accident! It takes intent to do so which includes saying no or yes to things even though they might prefer the other option!
